Reading, printing, and saving the Post Adoption on-line documents.
All the documents available on-line within the site
are produced in Portable Document Format [pdf].
This makes it possible to read, print, download and save the documents from most
types of computers.
To do this, software called Adobe Acrobat Reader from Adobe needs to be installed
on your computer. It is free to download and the latest version is Acrobat Reader 5.
If you do not have a version of this software installed, you can download the latest
version free from: www.adobe.co.uk
or to go directly to the download page by
clicking here.
For users with visual impairment
a special version is available that is compatible with
some screen readers (Accessibility) via the Microsoft
Active Access API (MSAA). For more information on accessibility
and Acrobat Reader, including non-MSAA solutions, visit
http://access.adobe.com.
Technical tips and troubleshooting.
Q - How to print a
document or save it to your hard
drive.
Ans - At the top of each
PDF document there are little
icons (pictures) such as a printer
and a floppy disk which form part
of Acrobat Reader - use these
controls to print or save a document
(see diagram below). Placing your
mouse over each icon informs you
what it does.
Q - The document will not
open from the link.
Ans - If you are still
having problems and you are using
Microsoft's browser version IE
4 or 5 for the PC then try clicking
on the link to the PDF file you
wish to view with the right
mouse button. This will bring
up a small menu - selecting 'Save
Target As' enables you to
save the file and open it.
If you are using Netscape 4 the
option will be 'Save Link As'
and this performs the same task.
Q - If the PDF document
opens but only displays a blank
page.
Ans - This may be caused
by the 'View' is zoomed in to
a blank section of the page. Use
the dropdown menu (next to page
size box) to select a suitable
view. Best options to use are
100% or 'Fit width'. Alternatively
use the 'plus' or 'minus' symbols to
enlarge or decrease the document
size (see point 1 on the diagram
below).
Searching PDF's
When you click on the link to
a PDF, it will open in your browser
window. A toolbar will apppear
below the address bar, featuring
a set of tools to help you view
and search the document.
Placing your mouse over each of
the icons (without clicking) will
inform you what each of them does.
The 'Find Tool' (a pair
of binoculars) is very useful.
Clicking on the 'Find Tool' icon allows
you to search the document for
a phase or word (see point 2 on
diagram below). Click the next
icon to the right to search for
further occcurences of the phrase
or word (see point 3 on diagram
below).
** Please note that
users with Acrobat Reader 3
installed on their computer may
experience slight problems in
displaying certain fonts used
within the on-line documents.
