Sjorgen’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease which targets the healthy cells of the body. The white blood cells attack the moisture secreting glands in your body, which then causes dryness in your eyes, mouth and sometimes skin. As you know, tears and saliva keep bad bacteria out of your system. Once the white blood cells destroy the moisture secreting glands, you will be more susceptible to other complications such as periodontal diseases, cardiovascular diseases and even diabetes. It could also lead to the dysfunction of other vital parts of your body such as kidneys, blood vessels and central nervous system.
Sjogren’s syndrome causes remain obscure up to now. Most research leans towards heredity as the biggest factor of Sjogren’s syndrome. According to research, certain genes are more susceptible to Sjogren’s syndrome compared to others. These are often triggered by viral infection which activates the immune system. The genes alter the reaction of the immune system so they attack the good cells and the moisture producing glands instead. This then causes dryness in the mouth and eyes and other symptoms such as muscle pains and dry skin. Other possible causes of Sjogren’s syndrome include complications brought by rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
There is also no cure for Sjogren’s syndrome as of now. The only way you can keep Sjogren’s syndrome from developing to other complications is through alleviating the symptoms. Dry eyes and dry mouth are the most common symptoms of Sjogren’s syndrome. Dry eyes can be relieved by getting artificial tears. You may need a doctor’s prescription so you won’t get any allergic reaction from certain, over-the-counter artificial tears. Having your tear ducts surgically closed can also alleviate dry eyes. Surgeons can install collagen or silicone plugs into your tear ducts. While collagen plugs eventually dissolve, Silicone plugs remain in your eyes until they are removed or fall out.
For dry mouth, good dental health must be observed to keep bacteria level in the mouth in check. Brushing, flossing and gargling daily at least twice a day will keep bad bacteria away. But you need to avoid fluoride and alcohol based dental health products so as not to dry your mouth further. Keeping hydrated frequently can also alleviate dry mouth. Keep a bottle of water or unsweetened drink with you all the time and take little sips when eating or talking. This keeps your mouth moisturized to aid in digestion and keeping your breath fresh. Do not chug down huge amounts of liquid as this induces urination which could remove mucus in your mouth.
