Adoption Consultation and Therapy Services

“A unique service for adoption support”

This service has been sponsored by the Department of Health as a pilot and will be monitored and evaluated. If successful, the model could be developed across the UK. The service offers a regional resource to Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire and will offer consultation in these venues.

AIMS

  • To offer adopters and staff in local authorities, independent and voluntary family placement agencies an opportunity to discuss individual cases or issues related to the placement of children in substitute families
  • To offer consultation and therapeutic opportunities to adoptive families

    REFERRALS AND ATTENDANCE

  • Referrals can be made by staff or by adoptive parent themselves
  • Joint participation in making a referral and attending sessions is encouraged where it is appropriate but separate sessions are available to either parents or staff
  • Children and young people are not normally involved in the initial consultation but are included subsequently as appropriate.

    STAFFING

This service offers a multi-disciplinary team approach. Staff have backgrounds in clinical psychology, family therapy, social work and educational psychology, and all have many years’ experience of working with children.

    INFORMATION IN ADVANCE

It is helpful to receive information, especially prior to the first session, and this could be existing documents or something especially prepared for the occasion. Some people bring a list, their diary or other notes to refer to on the day. If you prefer us to work without background papers we will do so.

    WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY

The session lasts around 1½ hours. During the session, there will be opportunity to reflect on the discussions.

Feedback is drawn together at the end and usually consists of ideas and options for the way ahead, rather than attempting to come up with the “right” answer. Decisions are left to those best fitted to making them. Feedback from participants is welcomed.

A brief summary letter will be provided upon completion of the consultation. If a written report is required there will be a separate charge.

    EVALUATION

After the session participants are invited to complete a short evaluation form, which allows us to monitor and evaluate our service and gain ideas for how to improve it. Forms can be completed anonymously if preferred.

    BOOKINGS

Monthly sessions are held in the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire areas. The service is free for post adoption support, but pre-placement consultation can also be undertaken for a sessional fee.

Please be aware that bookings are taken on a first come first served basis
